Un lettore umanista di Plutarco: storia, biografia e sapienza antica in L. B. Alberti
TL;DRAbstract
The paper examines several of Alberti’s references to passages from Plutarch's works, especially those regarding pointed sayings and Roman customs. In addition to revealing Alberti’s erudite and antiquarian perspective, they help the reader to focus on the humanist’s interest in exemplary deeds and virtuous life of a number of historical characters through which he meant to provide his audience with behavioural models and therefore to restore the moral paradigms of the Ancients in the Humanistic Age. Based on these quotations, Alberti’s approach does not merely show a remarkable familiarity with Plutarch's Moralia and Lifes but it also highlights his considerable skill in combining history with ethical philosophy. From this viewpoint, Alberti can be considered an excellent reader of Plutarch and especially noteworthy as an acute perceiver of his genuine lesson.
