TL;DRAbstract

Since the independence of India in 1947 and its partitioning into India and Pakistan, considerable socio-economic change has occurred in South Asia, much of it favourable. The same has happened in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) since it achieved independence from Pakistan in 1971. This is not, however, to suggest that all the favourable socio-economic changes which have occurred can be attributed to political independence.
