Social Determinants of the Timing of the First Birth.

TL;DRAbstract

The social and cultural determinants of age at first birth (background characteristics characteristics of early adolescence and processes occuring simultaneously with timing of 1st birth) was investigated using data from a sample of 6752 ever-married women under 45 years of age from the 1970 National Fertility Study (NFS) and 9797 women 45 years of age and under from the 1973 Family Growth Study (FGS). Of the variables in the background characteristics category only race and religion manifested substantial direct and indirect effects on age at 1st birth. Thus being Black produced a negative direct effect on age at 1st birth the effect being strengthened by the negative impact of being black on education. Being Catholic produced a positive effect on age at 1st birth but the effect was reduced by the negative effect of being Catholic on education.
