TL;DRAbstract

We all know what a bad Roman governor was, but Cicero shows us with his proconsulate in Cilicia how a good governor was supposed to rule. Some words come back again and again in his letters which are all connected to the idea of mildness. Wether in the diplomatic and military fields or in the administrative and financial organization of his province, Cicero tried to be mild and gentle. His models might well have been Xenophon and Mucius Scaeuola, but his friend Atticus also had a great influence on him to promote this policy.
