Effect of the 1BL/1RS translocation on yield components and grain yield in hard red winter wheat in Nebraska

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the 1BL/1RS wheat-rye translocation on yield components and grain yield of hard red winter wheat in diverse Nebraska environments. Two different genetic backgrounds were used: (1) a set of randomly $\rm F\sb3$-derived genotypes from the cross 'Siouxland'/'Ram' (Siouxland is a 1BL/1RS source whereas Ram is a non-1RS cultivar), and (2) a random set of $\rm F\sb{12}$-derived genotypes from the wheat cultivar 'Rawhide' (Rawhide is heterogenous for the 1BL/1RS translocation). Genotypes were screened by electrophoresis for the presence or absence of the translocated segment. Field trials with the identified genotypes were conducted in seven (Siouxland/Ram background) and four (Rawhide background) environments. A 9% yield increase on 1BL/1RS over 1B and heterogeneous genotypes was found in the Siouxland/Ram background.
