TL;DRAbstract

The objective is to study the shock compression and release behavior of specific materials shocked to stresses above 100 kbar. The results of this study will help to develop a calculational model to predict the seismic coupling efficiencies of geologic materials. Possible solid-solid phase changes are important in this connection. During the six month extension of the current contract year, we are examining the effects of porosity, water compression in the pores, and phase changes that may occur during shock compression. The work is divided into four tasks: (1) A study of the effect of polymorphic phase changes on the release paths in a feldspar. The response of feldspar will be compared with that of novaculite and the results will be used to develop a model for the loading and release behavior of silicate rocks; (2) Determination of release paths for dry and saturated porous Indiana limestone; (3) Comparison of the release behavior in a nonporous limestone with the behavior of Indiana
