TL;DRAbstract

This article examines, from a theoretical and methodological angle, ways in which the so-called morphological principle is handled as a synchronic guide-line both by advocates and critics of the spelling reform presently under discussion in the German-speaking countries. The analysis is supported empirically by an investigation of the semantic motivation and the historical usage in the domain of and spellings as reflected in various types of dictionaries. It follows from this study that both the reform and its critique stand in need of correction
