TL;DRAbstract

In 384 d.C. a historical controversy occurred in Milan during the imperial consistorium of Valentinian II. The object of the controversy concerned the opportunity to replace, in the seat of the Senate in Rome, the ancient pagan altar of the goddess Victoria, uninstalled two years before by the emperor Gratianus. This dispute involved from a side the noble orator Symmachus, who pled the pagan cause (Relatio III), and from the other the pugnacious bishop Ambrosius, who sustained instead, with success, the inopportunity to replace a pagan symbol in a place where the majority of the senators were by now Christians (Epistulae XVII e XVIII).
