Découverte du genre abyssal Fauveliopsis (Annélide Polychète) en Méditerranée occidentale

Lucien Laubier-1972-01-01-Institutional Archive of Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea)

TL;DRAbstract

A member of the genus Fauveliopsis (Annelida Polychaeta flabelligeridae) was discovered in different stations of the western Mediterranean abyssal plain. Already known in the northern Atlantic Ocean, this species most probably exists in the northern Pacific Ocean as well. Its abundance in the western Mediterranean Sea leads us to review a number of notions on the absence of a real abyssal fauna in this sea and on the extreme paucity of the deep plain between 2 000 and 3 000 m.
