“I’ll guarantee if you walk into any pet shop in Australia, the resident galah will be talking about microeconomic policy.”  Paul Keating (1)      As the above quote implies, Microeconomic Reform came to be one of the most frequently used terms in policy through the 1980s and into the 1990s.       Following their Federal election victory on 5 March 1983, the Australian Labor Party (ALP), first under the leadership of Bob Hawke and then Paul Keating, pursued numerous policy initiatives that came to be described as microeconomic reform. Such initiatives formed an integral part of the Labor Government's overall economic policy.       However the microeconomic reform agenda of the now former Labor Government remains an area of public policy that has not been subject to extensive scrutiny and analysis. The literature covering its application, why it emerged when it did and whether it has been successful or not, is still growing and the focus of debate. Community understanding of the term ca
