Aspectos toxicológicos das plantas medicinais utilizadas no Brasil: um enfoque qualitativo no Distrito Federal

Medicinal plants are vegetables that are used for therapeutic purposes; one or several parts of them can be used in different applications. Some examples of preparation include teas, ointments and inhalation. The Cerrado, second Brazilian biome in area, has a rich nature, including a lot of medicinal plants. There are few works that identify these plants. In this study, a bibliographic review about toxicology of medicinal plants used in Brazil was performed, and a qualitative exploratory research was realized, in order to identify the most commercialized medicinal plants in the federal district region. A review of the available literature revealed that medicinal plants can act either as therapeutic or as toxic, depending on how it is used. The undesirable effects of some medicinal plants include burning, abortion and even cancer. Therefore, the population must be careful when consuming this kind of product.
