On 4 th -6 th June 2012, the United Nations will be observing the fortieth anniversary of the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, the twentieth anniversary of the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (also known as the Rio Earth Summit), and the tenth anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) when it hosts the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) in Rio de Janeiro. The Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), 1 on the other hand, will be entering its nineteenth year since sustainable development first appeared on its agenda in 1993. This subject received a recent boost when the United States assumed the chair of APEC and listed sustainable growth as one of three key goals. The 2011 APEC Summit is set to revisit the Yokohama Vision, which has identified sustainable growth as one of five growth strategies for the APEC member economies going forward.
