BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common and serious disease. In the last years research findings have shown an enormous change in the diagnosis and therapy of DVT. According to research results, the combination of ultrasound, d-dimer assay and pretest probability has displaced venography as diagnostic method of first choice. Regarding treatment of DVT, there has been a shift from inpatient therapy with bed rest and intravenous unfractionated heparin (UFH) to home treatment with ambulation and subcutaneous low molecular weight heparin (LMH). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to show to what extend findings of thrombosis research have been transferred into practice at the university hospital of Göttingen, Germany.METHOD: In this retrospective study the records of 561 patients who came to the university hospital of Göttingen with the suspect of DVT in the years 1990/91, 1995/96 and 2000/01 were analysed.
