TL;DRAbstract

Professional supervision for music therapists is regarded as important in relation to the maintenance of competent and ethical practice. However limited professional guidelines and little evidence exists to support this practice. The primary research question of this mixed methods study explored Australian-based Registered Music Therapists’ (RMTs’) views, experiences and practices regarding professional supervision. Seven secondary research questions were investigated: 1. How frequently, who funds and where does the practice of supervision take place? 2. Why do RMTs access supervisors from different professional backgrounds? 3. What theoretical models, approaches and types of supervision are accessed? 4. What are RMTs’ experiences of professional supervision and the themes that characterize their experiences? 5. How are supervisory experiences influenced by the professional background of the supervisor accessed? 6. What are the outcomes of supervision described in their experiences? 7.
