Summary Aggression has many possible causes. Any individual who regularly performs acts of violence against family or others may be responding to one or several internal or external cues that stimulate that behavior. This article reviews many common conditions associated with violence. These are divided into neurological/systemic conditions, psychiatric conditions, and societal/cultural expectations. Conditions also associated with substance abuse are emphasized.
