Abstract: The Frio Formation in the Upper Gulf Coast of Texas

TL;DRAbstract

ABSTRACT A fortunate sequence of geologic events resulted in the deposition of the prolific oil- and gas-bearing Frio formation in the Houston area. This formation, identified by most geologists as Oligocene in age, occupies a position between the Vicksburg and Anahuac marine shale wedges, both of which reached a considerable distance inland from the present coast line. The Anahuac shale is the sealing cover for a large number of important fields producing from the upper part of the Frio. Structural growth and deformation occurred simultaneously with deposition of the Frio formation, resulting in multiple reservoir accumulations in many fields over this area. Frio producing structures include piercement salt domes, deep seated domes, faulted anticlines and other fault-related traps. The deep seated domes are the most prolific producers in the Houston area.
