Preliminary investigation of the ultra-violet pulse photolysis of nitromethane
TL;DRAbstract
The luminescent fragments, CN, C/sub 2/, and CH, seem to be created by secondary processes since they were prominent features of luminescent spectra obtained in cumulative photolysis experiments. The fragments CN and C/sub 2/ seem to have a common history since their lifetimes, nitromethane dependence, and argon dependence are similar. These fragments were predominant in the focused beam experiments, but at very low pressures of nitromethane excited NO/sub 2/ is the foremost species and the CH fragment is formed from secondary processes associated with the occurrence of NO/sub 2/ as the primary fragment. The fragments observed in the ..pi..-..pi..* focused beam experiments were also found in the multiple-infrared photodissociation of nitromethane. The CH emission was more intense and additional emission from O/sub 2/ and OH were observed for the infrared induced dissociation. Selectively dissociating nitromethane by normal vibrational modes associated with the N-atom brings the lumines
