TL;DRAbstract

Oxygen barrier performances and mechanical properties of SiOx coatings deposited on PET films by PECVD have been improved by the application of ultra-thin (10-500 nm) UV-polymerized silane compounds layers. Depending on the processing conditions, oxygen transmission rates of silane treated SiOx/ PET barrier films were measured to be twice better than witness samples, and the coating strains to failure of treated SiOx were improved from 1.5% to 5.0%. Such huge improvement in mechanical property of the silane/silica barrier coating, with a toughness as high as 80 J/m 2 , was found to be controlled by the conversion state of the silane layer with influence of temperature, UV-light intensity and photo-initiator concentration.
