In this paper the large shallow-water “<em>Octopus vulgaris</em>-like”, which supports small-scale fisheries in Peru and northern Chile, is determined to be <em>Octopus mimus </em>Gould, 1852. Adults of the species are redescribed and a neotype is designated. A synonymy list is presented. <em>O. mimus </em>is compared with <em>O. vulgaris</em>, <em>O. fontanianus </em>and <em>O. megalocyathus</em>. The known distribution of <em>O. mimus </em>extends up to 30 m depth and from the northern Peru to San Vicente Bay in Chile, but its exacts bathymetric and geographic limits are unknown.
