TL;DRAbstract

The recent history of social movements analysis seems to consists of two main theoretical perspectives. The first one concerns mostly organizational aspects of the phenomenon sketching it as a kind of rational actor using resources and grasping opportunities in order to achieve some planned goals. The second one has been focused mainly on psychological as well as cultural aspects of the phenomenon. This perspective treats it as a collectivity seeking its own identity and elaborating in the discourse its view of itself, its partners and/or enemies as well as frames of understanding the surrounding reality. The first perspective has usually been called as a resource mobilization paradigm, while the second one has been named as a new social movement theory. The first one has been linked to American tradition in social theorizing, while the second one has been viewed as a product of European tradition in social sciences.
