TL;DRAbstract

The aim of this paper is to give an account of the relations existing between rhetoric and the quest for a nation in the Italian risorgimentale prose and its Sicilian negation in the 20th century. We analyze Ippolito Nievo’s magnum opus (Confessioni di un italiano) trying to find out the tradition that comes from Dante (§1) and the ideal and prescriptive scope of this piece of art (§2). Finally, we search the common but nonetheless morally and esthetically opposed elements in Pirandello’s I vecchi e i giovani and Tomasi di Lampedusa’s Il gattopardo (§3).
